The Big Deal with Twitter

Tab Pierce, Director, Business Development at Security Innovation asks, over on LinkedIn:
OK...so what's the big deal with Twitter? I've had several people talk to me about joining. Which I finally did, but what's the big deal? People posting what's going on in their lives. We do that here with updates, it's done on Facebook and Myspace too. Am I missing something? I love useful tools, so I'm hoping someone can provide me with that aha! moment so I get it.

A simple (and safe!) way to build your LinkedIn network

I notice when I ask a question over on LinkedIn's Questions and Answers forum (it says "Answers" at the top of the main page - click on it and ask away - up to eight/month for free users (I think))- I get a boatload of Invitations from people asking me to join their networks. I don't know if anyone else has mentioned this but I think it's what's driving some of my membership over there! Here's a question I asked today - it's about sourcing (of course!) and so far today I've had a dozen or so invites.

It's a good way to build your network without risking that "I don't know this person" rebuff which can get your account placed in Limbo. Has anyone else noticed the effectiveness of using their "Answers" function?

Few Internet entrepreneurs practice what they preach as devoutly as LinkedIn Corp. co-founder Reid Hoffman, whose business revolves around his belief that good fortune flows from good relationships.

Hoffman, 40, has put that principle to work by mining his own vast network of Silicon Valley connections to rake in one Internet jackpot after another.

A college friendship led Hoffman to PayPal and his first windfall when eBay Inc. (EBAY) bought the online payment service for $1.5 billion in 2002. Since then, he has become even wealthier by investing in other Internet startups he discovered through friends and former colleagues.
