Wanted: Internat'l and Stressed Out Sourcers and Recruiters!

Wanted: Participants for next week's MagicMethod Classroom Chats - if you have something to offer please consider attending the chats next week here!

MagicMethod Classroom Discussion Topics August 5 & 7
Discussion August 5
I would like to discuss the amount of stress that recruiters/sourcers experience in their jobs and how to deal with frustrations and angry people. Today (July 29) an article was published that according to research 85 % of recruiters experience a high amount of stress. Apparently they score the highest compared to other professions. Could we bring this up?

Discussion August 7
Can you let me know if and when you happen to speak on the topic of Sourcing from an international perspective. We currently have operations in Canada, Dublin Ireland and London. I know Canada is not that international but it would be good to sit on a chat to discuss and hear what others may be doing.
Thank you and have a great day!

Thursday's Sourcing Class - The Underbelly of Sourcing (cont'd)

Thursday's Sourcing Class - The Underbelly of Sourcing (cont'd)
Today, Thursday, July 10 we're going to continue the talk about the dark side of sourcing over in the MagicMethod Phone Sourcing Classroom Chat at noon EST.

Many people think this telephone sourcing business is easy because, shouldering the blame; some of us have made it “look” easy. As one experienced sourcer, Elizabeth Smith says:
There is nothing easy about it. Data points here:
1. You will always be called to task for your value
2. You will always be called to task for you time and productivity
3. You will have to explain what you do 100 times to people at all levels, and then....
4. When you work on actual projects, you will have to explain your purpose again.
5.......and again......
6. You must help to define your purpose and set goals because you don't 'own' the requisition--Maureen can explain that better than I ...but suffice it to say....
7. You don't get near enough info to put together a strong sourcing plan/strategy, sooooo
8. You have to get sassy and almost pushy about getting the info....and remember you have to get it because
9. You have to define your purpose and set goals to see success--planning ahead is needed, training and strategy are needed...

Best Student Remark of the Day "People lump recruiting and sourcing into the same category a lot of times and they are very different functions." ~ Ryan Haire ******

Denyse Diem
Hi Ryan - happy to meet you - Hello Animal! Good to see you again

Maureen Sharib
Let's start - has everyone read the blog Post below - "Notes From the Underbelly"? Did you happen to notice the two responses that came from Elizabeth and Ms. Mendoza?

Denyse Diem
yes - great tips. to all the experienced sourcers here- - what part of this business is most challenging for you?

Recruiting Animal
Hi Denny

Maureen Sharib
Good question. Most challenging - I think working alone would be the answer for some people

Denyse Diem
Please love - if it's one nick name I hate (and I rarely use that word), please don't call me Denny - anything thing else thanks

Maureen Sharib
There you go Animal, stepping on toes. You gonna watch yourself today?

Denyse Diem
so the isolation and technique....

Maureen Sharib
A lot of new sourcers are concerned about the Gatekeeper - they worry what she's gonna do/say to them. Yes the isolation can be a big problem for some people - if you're going to be a phone sourcer typically you RELISH working alone - in fact - you much prefer it.

Maureen Sharib
Elizabeth said, in her Blog Post comment: “sourcing is still such an enigma that you must be clear on purpose.”

Maureen Sharib
Can anyone tell us what she is referring to?

MagicMethod Classroom Chat Log TH, June 26, 2008

Best Remark of the Day "It costs less (offshore Internet sourcing) but of course, you get what you pay for (usually)." ~ Jamie Schwartz

Maureen Sharib
Today's (TH, June 26) subject is about an exciting discussion that's breaking out in hives over on ERE: Are Internet Generated Names inherently worth Less than Phone generated names due to the ease of generating them. And if so why aren't Internet Name Generators lowering their prices to be more competitve with offshore options? Jeff Weidner asks http://is.gd/GG5

Recruiting Animal
I don't see it as controversial as all. It's a no brainer

Maureen Sharib
You think it's a no brainer, Animal? The subject is about a discussion that's taking off over on ERE...

Recruiting Animal
I know the answer. If you go through an office today and the internet is generating names from last year. Well, which is more reliable Show's over. I answered the question!

Maureen Sharib
Do you think most of them rely on the Internet and the boards to source? Do we have anyone doing offshore sourcing present?

MagicMethod Phone Sourcing Classroom Chat Log Thursday, June 12, 2008

Maureen Sharib Hi Cora - your issue is on the board today - did everyone read Cora's dilemma listed in the “Blog Posts” section of this site?- the post about Configuration Managers. Cora wants to know how to find Configuration Managers w/ certain experience - Cora - can you tell us what's happened so far?

Cora Player
the skillset must have is harvest and openmake- two different technologies that work together to automate builds. very niche- found someone about a month ago and he backed out. client wants 100% travel- haven't found anyone in surrounding states - fuel is becoming excuse for those I've most recently spoken to. anyway, i have names of companies that use openmake and figure that's a good start for names sourcing- i need guidance on next step for calling into those targets

Maureen Sharib
If they use OpenMake will they also be using Harvest?

Cora Player
great question, not necessarily, the other choice i have is harvest plus perl scripting and a little openmake. i need to find companies that use harvest too

Maureen Sharib
"...skillset must have is harvest and openmake- two different technologies that work together to automate builds" Don't you need BOTH?

Cora Player
yes, so i would really be playing a numbers game - not sure how to id companies that use BOTH technologies

Looking for Configuration Manager/Thursday Class Chat Subject

On June 11, 2008 at 8:27 AM, Cora Player wrote: Hi Maureen, I'm working a request for a client that needs a very niche skill set. I'm aware of several companies that might have viable candidates because they use the same combination of technology.

My question for you, and I think this would be a great discussion topic: What is the next step in this process? Do you have more luck calling into a customer service number rather than a main number? I've been working this blasted thing since March. Client will not compromise on skill set and they are requiring 100% travel, at least to start. Finally got the manager to agree remote work would be a possibility since fuel prices are affecting rates.

I'm looking for a Harvest/Openmake Configuration Manager for a company in PA. Shally Steckerl led me to a list of Openmake companies, but I'm just not sure how to get to those CMs in an ethical manner. I had a consultant from ComputerAssociates locked in and he backed out on me last minute. :(
Thanks!!!
Cora

We'll discuss Cora's dilemma in the second half of today's (TH June 12) MagicMethod Classroom Chat. The first half of class will continue Tuesday's excited discussion on the controversial cease and desist subject.

Best MagicMethod Student Remark of the Day “Any human emotion you can think of has a place in commerce. Especially lust, vanity, and desire.” ~ Steve Delaney

Maureen Sharib
Is the Fino here? He's the one who brought the dilemma we're going to address today. The thorny issue of what to do when you're told to STOP calling into a particular target to recruit their people or source their people! Anyone have this happen?

Dan Harris
Ha, Yep lots!

Maureen Sharib
Hi Fino. You brought something important up - you said (in your note to me) that you were recruiting MULTIPLE people out of a company at a time - I can see where THAT activity could be problematic and COULD release a stream of defense from a company...anyone else see this?

Dan Harris
has anyone else ever got a letter? cease/desist?
