Taboo

A taboo is a strong social prohibition (or ban) against words, objects, actions, discussions, or people that are considered undesirable by a group, culture, or society. Breaking the taboo is usually considered objectionable or abhorrent. Some taboo activities or customs are prohibited under law and transgressions may lead to severe penalties. Other taboos result in embarrassment, shame and rudeness.

Last year I had a saucy little number of a discussion appear in my ASK Maureen group over on ERE that titillatingly titled itself "Illegal Sourcing". "Interesting," I thought. "We'll see where this one goes."

Alas, it was not to be. After a promising and riotous first post in which the author reported that he had spent four months working for two different recruiting firms that "taught employees how to ruse illegally for candidates" the string took a nosedive. It seems at both of these companies the heads of the firms, the "presidents", had both taught recruiters how to impersonate U.S. governmental officials in order to get very quick responses/source names from target companies. The author had left both firms because "their behavior was illegal and unethical".

It all sounded perfectly deliciously gossipy to me and just the perfect kind of discussion things can be learned from.

Creative Simpleness

I was watching one of the news channels yesterday and the reporter stopped a woman on her way out of the voting precinct and asked her what her "voting experience" had been.

The woman appeared to be a rational, contemplative human bean in her forties and did not give the impression of someone who did not think about things. She calmly stated, "I voted for Hillary. Because she's a woman, and I think this country is ready for a female president." Without skipping a beat, she continued, "And because she's qualified. I think Hillary has the right amount of tough and the right amount of soft to get the job done."

Now those may not have been her words verbatim (though I did look for them on Google today and did not find them) but they're pretty darn close to what she said.

I was impressed that someone would so calmly say what many are thinking but do not voice because they're afraid of being ridiculed as being simple-minded.

Many times, simple works.

"Making the simple complicated is commonplace; making the complicated simple, awesomely simple, that’s creative." ~ Charles Mingus

Future Shock

This year alone more new information will be generated than in the previous 5,000 years. The amount of new technical information is doubling every two years.

One week's worth of the New York Times contains more information than a person was likely to come across in a lifetime in the 18th century.

The top 25% of people in China with the highest IQs is greater than the entire North American population. In India, it's the top 28% Translation: they have more honors kids than we have kids.

See the future here.

Chinese Internet Users Up to 210 Million

China The Chinese government said Friday its Internet population has soared to 210 million people, putting it on track to surpass the U.S. online community this year to become the world's largest.

The official China Internet Network Information Center, also known as CNNIC, said the online population grew 53 percent, from 137 million reported at the same time last year. According to the government's Xinhua News Agency, China is only 5 million behind the United States online, a figure consistent with some American estimates.

China still lags the United States in many respects, however.

Xinhua placed China's online penetration rate at 16 percent - the point Americans were at in the mid-1990s. According to the Pew Internet and American Life Project, 75 percent of American adults are now online; penetration is even higher when teens are included. (China's stats cover Chinese 6 and older.) When ethics bring trouble

Posted by Maureen Sharib
Death_row For 10 years, Leslie P. Smith, a Virginia lawyer, reluctantly kept a secret because the authorities on legal ethics told him he had no choice, even though his information could save the life of a man on death row, one whose case had led to a landmark Supreme Court decision.

Mr. Smith believed that prosecutors had committed brazen misconduct by coaching a witness and hiding it from the defense, but the Virginia State Bar said he was bound by legal ethics rules not to bring up the matter. He shared his qualms and pangs of conscience with only one man, Timothy G. Clancy, who had worked on the case with him. Read the whole story here.
