Even in the midst of a struggling economy, strong salaries are cropping up in the most unexpected places. Choose the right blue collar job, and you could be earning an upwardly mobile income. Choose the right education or creative profession, and you could turn a "labor of love" into labor for good money. Choose the right industry, and you could be earning much more for the same work. Surprising salaries aren't hard to come by: simply find a high-demand niche, get the education to fulfill the job requirements, and start earning what you're worth.

Most stressful cities

The crisis on Wall Street has New Yorkers alarmed. But it’s nothing compared to the levels of anxiety those living in the Windy City feel each day.

Chicago's rising unemployment rate, expensive gas, high population density and relatively poor air quality create a perfect storm of stress, according to measures we used to calculate the country's anxiety hot spots.

New Yorkers can relate, though... Detroit, Mich., Los Angeles, Calif., and San Francisco, Calif., ranked third, fourth and fifth, respectively.

Companies Not Hiring, Workers Not Looking As Economy Falters

The ranks of passive jobseekers are growing as workers decide now is not the time to look for a new job. Many, in fact, are considering taking classes to improve their job prospects, while 41 percent told pollsters they intend to stay in their present job until they retire. Another 38 percent said they expected to hold onto their current job for at least another year.

Wise decisions, considering that only 23 percent of the companies surveyed intend to add full time workers in the next three months.

Are we going to Hell in a handbasket?

I keep hearing the panic in our Industry - it's there, in the voice, right below the surface. It's coming up in discussions ever-so-slowly and the railing is beginning in the chats heard 'round town...

I was reading something the other day (or hearing something - I forget which) and it said unemployment during the 1929 Depression was 25%. When I thought about it the number did not surprise me but I would bet if someone had asked me what I "thought" it had been I would have said higher.

Timeline 1920s Decade - 1945

NOW is the time for all of us to get a grip and understand that the workforce that most of us are dealing with are not yet likely to become "unemployable" like many of those without degrees are becoming...let's not lose sight of this fact:

According to new tables released on the Internet titled Educational Attainment in the United States: 2004, 85 percent of those age 25 or older reported they had completed at least high school and 28 percent had attained at least a bachelor’s degree — both record highs. Read that whole thing here.

Sure, their decision making is going to be affected - and that's what we need to be aware of.

Flat Fees

Interesting discussion over on ERE about flat fees. Pay special attention to what Jim Cargill says - here's part of his reasoning below - what do you think?

"...Many Hiring Managers feel better about a flat fee because they know what they will be paying, regardless of what the salary is. I will bet $1 that you are usually quoting your fee before you find out what the salary and job qualifications are...right? If you are doing that, you have no idea what you are basing your efforts on, and you lose leverage in the fee issue. Find out the salary, and all you can about the position before you quote a fee. Base the fee on how difficult the search is, AND how difficult the client is to work with. I recommend you quote a % fee first (let's say 25% as an example). If the job pays $100K, the fee is $25K. After the HA gets his/her breath back, and tells you that is way too much, ask why? Don't say anything....make them answer. Whatever they answer is going to be wrong..."

Toni Buccarelli M- I think it is important to stress that everyone has at least one landline phone plugged into a phone jack, vs. cordless or VoIP. The "phone company" has longer staying power than the 'power' companies.

Maureen Sharib I agree Toni. Besides that, as you know, I recommend every phone sourcer use a land line.
